Student Spring Days 2008

This year Student Spring Days took place from 21. april to 24. april. There were lots of great events where students could have gone to and have a lot of fun.

I would like to start with the opening parade. There were present a lot of students and I'm glad to announce that again Tallinn University was best present. There were a lot of TLU students and a lot of TLU college caps. We ruled the parade again. After the parade there was night singing festival where all these students together sang known Estonian national songs.

On tuesday BFM Student council took part of
CARDBOARD MACHINE DESTRUCTION DERBY, which was so great event. We built a great Ferrari car and then went to the start. Everything was great until third meter of the race when we crashed with others and broke our ride totally. But we managed to get to the finish line and finish third. Though actual winner was not the team that first reached the finish line but the team which made most show and rammed most. And the winner was..... "Camera F1" from TLU BFM. Jeeeee...

After that students moved on to probably the most popular event of Student Days and it is Peda Folk. This was a very great party and I'm quite sure that all the people that came there were satisfied.

On other days there were a lot more great events but I won't go in detail describing those.

Link to read more about Student Days: Tudengipäevad

So thats it for now.
I'm sad that there were so few from BFM taking part of the Days but at least those who did know that it was great fun.

BFM will be homeless from autumn 2009?

Is it fair that one University gets most of money given to Estonian education from Europe? I don't think so. But this has happened and because of that from autumn 2009 Tallinn University Baltic Film and Media School will be homeless. Tallinn University applied for some money to be able to buy a house for BFM and Tallinn University Art Institute. Decision makers though decided not to give the money and now BFM has reached a situation where it will be left homeless because it doesn't have the money to buy a house and Estonian government won't also give it.

Those people who decide where the money goes told that they will give huge amount of money to Estonian Art Academy which is going to build a brand new house for as I have heard 700 million kroons. So they will get that money and then they will build the house so that BFM will get rooms in that house as well, but the house will be ready around 2013, but what will happen to BFM during those 4 years? Well nothing, BFM students will get their education under trees.

THe house that BFM would buy if they would get the money is in first place much cheaper and second the house is already built and so BFM could move in time so that it would not be homeless for years. The house would be Estonian Film Center where Estonian films can be done and also the students would get a chance to work with real professionals who have worked in the field for years. But no, Estonian politicians have decided other. If Estonian politicians will keep playing with that school this way Estonia will end up losing something very good. If this school will happen to get more and better support abroad I wouldn't be surprised if ti would move away from Estonia and who will loose then? Estonia.

Sorry that I have written this post so sloppily but I'm just so angry on that situation.

On 15th April at 13:30 there will be a tour to this building what BFM would like to buy. There will be lots of students present there as well and we will keep fighting for our future and we want home no matter what.

This blog is probably most read by my fellow students so I call you all there and lets fight for our house.

Happy birthday TLU

Jippii

Today is the day when Tallinn University has a birthday. Isn't it fun??
Best thing about this is that the students of Tallinn University weren't absolutely informed about this. The public relations department who is organizing today a fancy birthday party decided that students are not welcome to the party. So they decided not to send out any message about the birthday. That is nice or what? At the same time Tallinn University is talking about problem that students of Tallinn University don't feel like a big family. And this is going to help, when you don't invite them to the birthday of university???

So about the party. I am working in Student Union so I know some things. The party is meant only for the workers of TLU and TLU's partners. All workers got an invitation to the party except the board of Student Union, who are officially workers of TLU as well. Great, students were totally left out this time. When Student Union went to talk to public relations office, they asked not to go and tell rector that student representatives are not invited. Well, we did go and after that PR department said that we can buy the tickets for 500.- EEK per person. Who is the entertainer? Rihanna? This is nuts.

Well finally we managed to get things so far that we didn't have to buy tickets, we got them for free. But still question is in my mind. Why is the birthday of Tallinn University only for workers??? Students make the university, why aren't they invited???

Welcome

Hello,

My name is Tormis Laanisto and I am a second year PR student of Tallinn University Baltic Film and Media School. i am also the chairman of BFM student council BaFiMe. I am working in the Tallinn University Student Union as a PR specialist so the educational issues are very interesting for me. I am fighting for ability to get the best education I can get and this is one reason I have started this blog.

My point making this blog is not to offend anyone. I will not mention any names and try to make some people look bad in the eyes of the readers. My point is to bring out the problems from the viewpoint of a student. The blog is not to say that things are undone or something like that, it is to help people see what are the problems and to give some solutions to solve problems. I am willing to give a hand solving these problems. My idea is that when I am paying a lot of money for my education I want to get good quality education in return, not just the degree. Comments on my blog are more than welcome, so comment when ever you have something to say to me.

As I also work in Tallinn University Student Union my very big concern is that students of Baltic Film and Media School don't feel like a part of Tallinn University. There was a questionnaire for the freshmen of Tallinn University and so also for the freshmen of BFM. There was a question: When you applied into Tallinn University did you also apply into some other university. There were many answers given. As the last answer there was given a chance to write some other university not listed above and one student wrote BFM. This answer was not given because BFM is part of Tallinn University. In my eyes this is very bad that our students don't actually know where they are.

I can't say that this is only problem of this one student. I read from newspapers all the time some things about BFM but there is not always mentioned that it is TALLINN UNIVERSITY BALTIC FILM AND MEDIA SCHOOL. Why? I don't know the answer.

As I am also part of BFM student council it is subject close to my heart that our students would know that they are students of Tallinn University and also to make sure that new students coming to BFM would also know where they are entering.
